I saw a massive halo in India once, which went around the entire night sky from horizon to horizon and they are truly something to behold.

Funny, no one ever says it's raining fish?

Most likely, that picture of "St Elmo's Fire" off the airplane wingtip is just the strobe on the end of the wing diffracted through the cloud...
