Schizophrenia

October 14th 2009 00:33
There is much fear and ignorance of those members of society who suffer from mental illness. Schizophrenia is not multiple personality disorder, it is a brain disorder which creates distortions in perceptions and thinking. Sufferers are no more dangerous than other members of the community. With treatment and a little understanding, they are able to lead normal lives.

To aid community understanding of this and other psychiatric conditions, click here to see an extract from an upcoming book titled Psychiatric Tales.

Most Famous Doctored Photographs

October 7th 2009 07:22
Image and photo manipulation have been around for as long as photography itself. As shown on Time Magazine's website, these are some of the most well known examples. See more here.

doctored photos
Lenin Addresses the Troops, 1920
One of the most widely reproduced scenes of the Russian Revolution, this photograph was taken by G.P. Goldshtein and was published in myriad forms during the Soviet era. The moment captures Lenin exhorting soldiers from the Red Army as they prepare to depart for the Polish front, where they would fight the troops of Josef Pilsudski.
photo manipulation
The Original Scene
Taken within seconds of the preceding photo, this frame reveals that Lenin was joined that day by fellow Central Committee members Leon Trotsky, who stands in hat and moustache on the stairs to the right of the podium, and Lev Kamenev, who stands behind him. Perceived by Stalin as rivals to his power, both men were ultimately purged and their contributions to the revolution largely eliminated from the historical record. Though the photograph was widely published with the two men present during the 1920s, it was reproduced with stairs in their place for most of the Soviet era, even during the Gorbachev period.

Modified photos - Hitler
Hitler Meets with Leni Riefenstahl, 1937
The Nazi filmmaker, center, is visited by the Führer in Berlin. They are joined by, at far left, her brother Heinz, and at far right, his wife Ilse. Note the ghostly outline next to Ilse in the middle right of the frame.

Original Scene
The missing figure turns out to be none other than Joseph Goebbels, the Third Reich's top propagandist and one of the architects of the Holocaust. It remains a mystery why Hitler had his loyal colleague erased from this photo; shortly after it was taken, history notes, Goebbels' standing with the Führer suffered a critical blow as Hitler became aware of his lieutenant's affair with an actress.

famous photographs - he's dead
Kent State, 1970
Fourteen-year-old Mary Ann Vecchio kneels over the body of Jeffrey Miller, a student at the university who was killed by National Guardsmen during a protest against the war in Vietnam. This Pulitzer Prize–winning photograph, taken by photojournalism student John Filo, became an icon of the tumultuous period.

The Original Image
For all its drama, the Kent State photo violated one of the cardinal rules of photographic composition: the fence post in the field behind Vecchio terminates at the top of her head, almost as if a giant nail has fallen into her skull. When the image was published in Life magazine that week, the editors opted to remove it.

Doctored Photos - Kim Jong Il
Kim Jong Il and North Korean Troops, c. 2009
Western observers of the PRK have long suspected that the photographs released by KCNA, North Korea's official news agency, are routinely manipulated to portray leader Kim Jong Il in the best possible light. This group photo, released in the wake of rumours that Kim had suffered a stroke, was closely scrutinized for inconsistencies. It purports to show him in the company of an honoured regiment.

Close-Up of the Original
Analysts zeroed in on this area of the photograph, where portions of the reviewing stand can be seen in, while the quality of the wood or metal also seems to differ, suggesting that Kim was inserted into the photo after the fact.

We are always told to wash our hands, especially before eating or preparing food or if visible dirt is present. Kitchen cloths and sponges are the biggest source of bacteria that we come into daily contact with, followed by sink faucets.
However, what about those surfaces in the home that appear clean? Surprisingly, some of them can contain disturbingly high levels of bugs.
The Hygiene Council on the UK has just released the results of its second annual International Home Hygiene Study. Based on their findings, today we look at the germiest places found in everyday homes and how to keep them germ free.
Information and images sourced from the Chicago Tribune. See and read more here.

Germy places in the home
TV remote
Imagine the typical couch potatoes -- watching TV while they absent-mindedly chew their fingernails, snack on food and flip through channels, leaving all kinds of bacteria on the remote. Make sure to sanitize the remote control regularly to prevent sickness.

Home hygiene - Microwave
Microwave touch screen
Raw food is put in the microwave to cook and could leave behind E. coli or Salmonella. Even though the food comes out cooked, the germs that can make you sick are left on the outside of the microwave for the next person to touch. It is important to wipe down the touch screen regularly, especially after cooking raw meat.

Germ rich places in the home - light switch
Light Switches
Touching the light switch is practically unavoidable, but keeping it clean is not. The bathroom light switch can have as many germs as the trash bin. Disinfect light switches twice a week or every day if a member of your household is sick.

Home cleanliness - shower and bath
Tub and shower
The shower is the third germiest place in the home. The bathtub may have 100 times more bacteria than the trash can. The Hygiene Council recommends that showers and tubs be disinfected twice a week to get rid of dead skin cells left in the tub that can carry germs too.

Mysterious Tree People of Papua

June 26th 2009 12:46
Tree People of New Guinea

The Kombai are a Melanesian tribal people from the Indonesian province of Papua in Western New Guinea. The Kombai have become prominent to the outside world primarily because of their traditional tree house dwellings, which often reach heights of over 20 meters. They live adjacent to the Korowai people, who also live in tree houses, and have some similar cultural practices. The two ethnic groups do interact, although as they speak different languages, mutual intelligibility is sometimes problematic. Pigs are equivalent to currency to the Kombai, for example, if the wife of a Kombai man were to die, the family of the woman may demand pigs as compensation. For Kombai men to marry, they first have to buy the woman from her family with necklaces made from dogs teeth.

Images From the Recession

It can be difficult to capture the pressures of the financial crisis in pictures. However, with increasing numbers of unemployed, housing foreclosures, construction stoppages, business closure and bankruptcies, you can't help but notice the effects of what some are calling "The Great Recession" as can be seen in the pictures below. Many more images from the economic downturn can be found in this article at Boston.com.

Michelle Obama's Wardrobe

November 17th 2008 01:30
Michelle Obama (née Robinson, born January 17, 1964) will be the first African-American First Lady of the United States.
She will also be the first young and attractive First Lady for many years. As such the public will watch what she wears and often follow suit. Her fashion choices will also be subjected to intense scrutiny, probably for the rest of her life.
Michelle Obama has been known to wear American designers such as Calvin Klein and also had her wardrobe filled with designers of Hispanic origin such as Oscar de la Renta, Isabel Toledo or Narciso Rodriguez. She has also made use of other lesser known designers, such as Donna Ricco or Maria Pinto. See below some of her outfits from the campaign, including the well known election night dress
