Terrifying Parasites

August 23rd 2010 04:37
Common symptoms of a parasite infection include constipation, diarrhoea, gas and bloating, joint aches, chronic fatigue, excessive hunger, and immune dysfunction. But it can get even worse than this, as reported on CBSNews, here are some of the most horrifying parasites ever. Read the full article here.

terrifying parasites
Bedbugs
Brown and about the size of an apple seed, Cimex lentacularius hides during the day and comes out at night, (shown piercing the skin of its host and drinking its fill. The bites don't spread disease but leave red, itchy welts. Bedbugs are so hard to exterminate that some people simply throw out their furniture, clothing, and bedding.

parasite symptoms
Botfly
Botflies aren't easily confused with common houseflies - they're hairy and about twice as big. They lay their eggs on a mosquito, which then lands on a person. Once hatched, the larvae invade the skin of the unlucky host. The babies proceed to eat their way to the muscle, leaving a sore around the breathing hole they make in the skin. Here's the truly disturbing part: Infected people report being able to feel and even hear the maggots moving about. Surgery is often necessary to remove the organisms.

Sandfly
If you're planning a vacation to South America, the Middle East, southern Europe or any of the 88 countries where sand flies like to hang, don't forget the insect repellent. Small and silent, the female sand fly can transmit a parasite that causes leishmaniasis. The bite is so small you might not even know you've been bitten - at first. There are two ways to get sick. Cutaneous leishmaniasis causes severe skin sores, while visceral leishmaniasis attacks the internal organs. You'll know you have the skin kind within a few weeks or months of being bitten. If you get the kind that attacks your insides, it can be months or even years.

intestinal parasites
Tapeworm
Planning a stay-cation? Don't be lulled into a sense of false security. Make sure you cook your BBQ thoroughly so you don't end up feeding your loved ones a side of tapeworm. Tapeworms attach to the intestinal wall, where they feed on nutrients from digested food. Tapeworms are looong. Typically, they grow to about nine to 15 feet, though some reach 50 feet. Often the host doesn't even know it's there until the worm gets really big. Expect the symptoms, if you have any, to be flu-like: headache, nausea, stomach cramps.

worst parasites on earth
Malaria
Lucky you, you have tickets to the tropics! But watch for mosquitoes. Some females can inject you with the malaria parasite, which takes up residence in the liver. Left untreated, the parasites multiply in red blood cells. At best you'll feel like you have a bad cold. Worst-case scenario? Coma and even death.

Life After The Taliban

July 23rd 2010 05:02
As News Week reports. When the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, they banned everything from cinema, to women's education, weather forecasting and even kite flying.
Now Afghans are slowly receiving back some basic freedoms, although there is still much work to be done.

What the Taliban banned
Kite Flying
Every Friday afternoon across Afghanistan, children of all ages fly kites and compete in aerial kite combat. Soon after the Taliban came to power, they banned this traditional Afghan pastime.

what the Taliban disallowed
Women's Education
Koba, 22, has been teaching for two years. She was the only teacher who allowed the photographer to take her picture. (Other teachers feared reprisal if their families found out they'd been photographed.)

Life in Afghanistan
Men Shaving
Under the Taliban, men (like these clients at a barber shop in Kabul) were forbidden to shave their beards. They were expected to grow their facial hair so that, if they held the beard in a fist below the chin, hair would still protrude below the hand.

Free Press returns to Afghanistan
Free Press
Reporting the news was heavily restricted by the Taliban. Local and national newspapers are once again available. Above, two men operate a printing press.

old weather balloons in Afghanistan
Weather Forecasting
Russian Weather balloons lie abandoned in a desolate building at the National Weather Agency. The Taliban decreed that to predict the weather was to predict God's will—an act that they denounced as un-Islamic sorcery.

June 14th 2010 02:20
The Jobs Of Yesteryear

As reported on NPR, as computers, robotics and automated systems come into our lives and society changes, many occupations become obsolete.
Here we take a look at jobs that no longer exist.

obsolete occupations

Cigar makers in Florida amd New York would sometimes pool their wages and employ a lector to read aloud to them while they worked. The above photo was taken in 1909.

Switchboard Operator
Starting in the late 1800, switchboards were very common and staffed almost exclusively by women. After about a century, switchboard operators were completely phased out by automated systems. This photo is of the Cordlandt exchange in New York, 1901.

Lamp Lighter
Lamp Lighters were once very efficient, carrying long ladders and lighting up to 300 street lamps an hour each as darkness fell on the city. Automatic lighting systems and electric lighting soon saw these gentlemen seeking work elsewhere. The above image was taken in London 1935.

Milkman
In the 1960s almost a third of households had their milk home delivered. As it became more convenient to buy it at grocery stores this figure has slowly declined to less than half a percent today.

As you may know reading minds is not possible in the literal sense. However, if you learn to read body language you will be able to tell what people are thinking.

As reported in this excellent article on ChaCha, mentalists have used body language for centuries to make it appear as though they have the power to read minds. With a little practice is it relatively easy for an everyday person to learn the same techniques as used by psychics, fortune tellers, magicians and other famous mentalists throughout history.
The info-graphic below gives a good summary of mind reading. To find out more read the full article here.

If you think that not talking will stop you from communicating you are dead wrong. There are so many visual cues that give away your thoughts that you may be revealing far more than you think. You may even be picking up on much more of what others are thinking. You may find yourself disliking another person for an unknown reason or you might feel like someone is trustworthy and kind, without their saying a word to you. These can all be due to things that you sense, but may not be conscious of.

The Facts About Smoking

March 8th 2010 01:19
From 1965 to 2006, rates of smoking in the United States have declined from 42% to 20.8%. A significant majority of those who quit were professional, affluent men. Despite this decrease in the prevalence of consumption, the average number of cigarettes consumed per person per day increased from 22 in 1954 to 30 in 1978. This paradoxical event suggests that those who quit smoked less, while those who continued to smoke moved to smoke more light cigarettes. This trend has been paralleled by many industrialized nations as rates have either levelled-off or declined. In the developing world, however, tobacco consumption continues to rise at 3.4% in 2002. In Africa, smoking is in most areas considered to be modern, and many of the strong adverse opinions that prevail in the West receive much less attention. Today Russia leads as the top consumer of tobacco followed by Indonesia, Laos, Ukraine, Belarus, Greece, Jordan, and China.

The info-graphic below lays out the raw facts about smoking including the statistics on how it affects your health, how easy it is to quit, what does smoking cost the economy, how much revenue governments raise from smokers and how much of that do they spend on anti-tobacco campaigns
