Insects are the most diverse group of animals on the earth, with around 925,000 species described which is more than all other animal groups combined. In today's post you will see some extreme close up pictures of various insects. More pictures can be found here.
There are approximately 2,000 species of praying mantis 5,000 dragonfly species, 20,000 grasshopper, 170,000 butterfly and moth, 120,000 fly, 82,000 true bug, 350,000 beetle, and 110,000 bee and ant species described to date.
The heaviest insect is the Goliath Beetle from tropical Africa, which weighs 100 grams. The longest is the Giant Stick Insect, which can reach 50cm with its legs outstretched. The longest lived is the Termite Queen, known to live for over 50 years in some species. Finally the quickest insect is the Dragon Fly, which has been known to reach speeds of up to 55 km/h.
Look out for this next mozzie! It could be something from a science fiction movie, or warfare of the future.
