Thanks to the Chicago Tribune, here are some classic photos from the early days of modern boxing.
Joe Louis and King Levinsky stripped down to shorts and dress shoes for the weighing-in ceremony before their fight at Comisky Park in August 1935. Louis needed just over two minutes to defeat Levinsky.
Three rings of action kept the heads of fans moving during the Golden Gloves tournament of 1954 at Chicago Stadium.
It took Sugar Ray Robinson 13 rounds to beat Jake LaMotta to claim the world middle-weight title in front of more than 14,000 fans at Chicago Stadium on Feb. 14, 1951.
Fighters participating in the Catholic Youth Organization's annual boxing tournament at Chicago Stadium in 1954 listened to instructions on sportsmanship before the sound of the first bell.
