China, By The Numbers
April 19th 2010 00:53
China is the most populous state in the world with over 1.3 billion people, about one in five humans.
At about 9.6 million square kilometres (3.7 million square miles), China is the world's second largest country by land area.
Since the introduction of market-based economic reforms in 1978, China has become the world's fastest growing major economy, the world's largest exporter and second largest importer of goods. Rapid industrialization has reduced its poverty rate from 53% in 1981 to 8% in 2001.
China is a major power and will one day be known as a superpower. It has the world's third largest economy nominally which is growing rapidly and is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and has the world's largest standing army with the second-largest defense budget. China has been characterized as a potential superpower.
With such a massive population and economy, the figures behind what China produces are literally stagerring as the info-graphic below demonstrates. The most incredible thing is, these numbers are all increasing at an incredible rate!
