Dakar Rally

January 30th 2009 05:49
The Dakar Rally is an annual off-road automobile race, organised by the Amaury Sport Organisation. Most events since the inception in 1978 were from Paris in France to Dakar in Senegal, but due to political instability in Africa, the 2009 Dakar Rally was run in South America, the first time the race took place outside of Europe and Africa. The race is open to amateur and professional entries. Amateurs typically make up about eighty percent of the participants.

Despite its name it is an off-road endurance race, called a rally-raid rather than a conventional rally the terrain the competitors traverse is much tougher and the vehicles used are true off-road vehicles rather than the modified sedans used in rallies. Most of the competitive special sections are off-road, crossing dunes, mud, camel grass, rocks and erg among others. The distances of each stage covered vary from short distances up to 800900 kilometres (500560 mi) per day.

Gadgets Throughout History

January 23rd 2009 04:34
We all enjoy the convenience of modern technology, however sometimes it can be interesting to take a look back through time and trace how our modern gadgets developed. Thanks to the Chicago Tribune, here are various pieces of technology that once upon a time were cutting edge.

Development of modern DVDs
DVD lineage - Even before there was a VCR in every home, new home entertainment mediums were being created. Here, Ken Ingram, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Magnavox, demonstrates a video disc player in September 1979.

Video Phone. Historic gadgets
Earl Dell Jr., 4, was excited about the experience of using one of the very first picture phones in December 1972. The phone was on display at the Museum of Science and Industry, touted as phone of the future.

Early video game history - Atari
The online poker industry may owe some props to Atari, which was one of the pioneers of video gaming, especially with games like black jack. Here, Dave Gardner, 14, demonstrates Atari black jack in June 1980, at a gaming convention in Chicago.

Early mobile phones in the 1980s
n just four short years, the cell phone went from fitting into a brief case to fitting into a chassis the size of a brick. Here, Chicago businessman Ed Lang conducts business out and about in August 1989.

Early home computer PCs
The cost of setting up a home computer in 1983 was, from left: printer $499, cassette recorder $59, central processing unit $1,000, modem $149 and graphics printer $995.

Light Paintings

January 21st 2009 04:15
Light Graffiti or Light Painting where a light source is used to create a picture is an art that has been practiced since the early days of photography. Light Graffiti Photography is normally taken at night or in a darkened room. A light source will usually be moved to create the images, sometimes however the camera can be moved instead.
Today's post features some beautiful examples of this art form, more can be seen at toxel.com here.

World's Largest Cat

January 16th 2009 11:13
The liger is a hybrid cross between a male lion and a female tiger (not to be confused with a tigon). It is the largest of all cats in existence today. The mix of genes in this way causes gigantism. Tigons with a male tiger and female lion are not as large in size.

Here are some pictures of one of the largest Ligers alive - Hercules and his trainer

The Milky Way, sometimes called simply the Galaxy, is the galaxy in which our Solar System is located. While very significant to us, it is actually only one of billions of galaxies in the observable universe.

The Milky Way galaxy, as viewed from the Earth appears as a hazy band of white light in the night sky originating from stars and other material that lie within the galaxy

Beautiful Frost

January 2nd 2009 10:55
Frost is formed when surfaces are chilled below the dew point of the surrounding air. There are many different kinds of frost such as radiation frost on plants or window frost. It is also capable of causing massive environmental and economic damage. However, in the right circumstances frost can form into beautiful and abstract pieces of art as seen in these images. Thanks to Environmental Graffiti for these.
