Sao Paulo

São Paulo is the capital of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The city is the largest in Brazil and fifth in the world by population and is located in the southeast of the country. It is also the richest city of Brazil. The name means Saint Paul in Portuguese.

The city has an area of 1,523 square kilometres (588 sq mi) and a population of 10,886,518, which makes it the most populous in Brazil, the Americas, and the southern hemisphere.

São Paulo is a major cultural centre. The city has an ethnically diverse metropolitan area, with heavy Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German, African, Jewish, Arab and Japanese influences. The city is known for its varied and sophisticated cuisine, ranging from Chinese to French, from fast food chains to five star restaurants. There are approximately 62 different types of cuisines in São Paulo, and more than 12,000 restaurants. Other venues such as bars, pubs, lounges and discos cater to a variety of music tastes.

São Paulo is home to the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) and "Pinacoteca do Estado" art museums, a symphonic orchestra (São Paulo State Symphony (OSESP - based in the Sala São Paulo theatre), and a Formula One Grand Prix racing circuit (Interlagos).

Many hotels and holiday resorts have a pool for the recreation of their guests. Normally the more luxurious the hotel, the better the pool. This isn't always the case, some hotels simply have a superior designed pool than others.

Beautiful Polar Bear Pictures

Today's post features some of the most beautiful pictures of polar bears you will find anywhere. See many more majestic photos at Paul Nicklen Photography here.

Polar bears are the world's largest land carnivores, with most adult males weighing 300-600 kg (660-1320 lb); adult females are about half the size of males. A Polar Bear's fur is hollow and translucent, but usually appears as white or cream coloured, thus providing the animal with effective camouflage. Its skin is actually black in colour. Its thick blubber and fur insulate it against the cold. The bear has a short tail and small ears that help reduce heat loss, as well as a relatively small head and long, tapered body to streamline it for swimming.

A semi-aquatic marine mammal, the polar bear has adapted for life on a combination of land, sea, and ice, and is the apex predator within its range. It feeds mainly on seals, young walruses, and whales, although it will eat anything it can kill.

The polar bear is a vulnerable species at high risk of extinction. Zoologists and climatologists believe that the projected decreases in the polar sea ice due to global warming will reduce their population by two thirds by mid-century.

Polar Bears are also popular attractions at theme parks and zoos around the world.

Beautiful Pictures from Africa

The climate of Africa ranges from tropical to subarctic on its highest peaks. Its northern half is primarily desert or arid, while its central and southern areas contain both savanna plains and very dense jungle (rainforest) regions. In between, there is a convergence where vegetation patterns such as sahel, and steppe dominate.

Earth Hour

Earth Hour is an annual international event started in 2007, held on the last Saturday of March, that asks households and businesses to turn off their lights and non-essential electrical appliances for one hour in the evening. The event is promoted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald.

During Earth Hour 2008 Melbourne, Australia saved 10.1% of electricity. Sydney, being the city that participated both 2007 and 2008 Earth Hour, cut 8.4% electricity consumption

Niagara Falls Frozen Over

April 7th 2008 12:25

The flow of water over Niagara Falls was stopped completely over both falls on March 29th 1848 due to an ice jam in the upper river for 30 - 40 hours. The Falls did not actually freeze over, but the flow was stopped to the point where people where able to walk the dry riverbed and find muskets, arrowheads and tomahawks from the War of 1812. This extraordinary event will most likely never happen again.

The Arctic is the region around the Earth's North Pole. The Arctic includes the Arctic Ocean (which overlies the North Pole) and parts of Canada, Greenland (a territory of Denmark), Russia, the United States (Alaska), Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland.
