March 30th 2007 11:49
Believe it or not, today marks the 1st birthday of photos.org.au! What better way to celebrate than to look at the most remarkable constructions mankind has ever produced?

The New Seven Wonders of the World is a proposed revision of the Seven Wonders of the World, organized by a Swiss-based, for-profit corporation called New Open World Corporation (NOWC). By November 24, 2005, 177 monuments were up for consideration. To be included on the new list, the wonders had to be man-made, completed before 2000, and in an "acceptable" state of preservation. On January 1, 2006, the NOWC said the list had been narrowed to 21 sites which are currently into a voting phase.

The final list is planned to be announced on July 7, 2007, or 07.07.07, in Lisbon.

The 21 finalists, listed alphabetically, are:

Acropolis of Athens - Athens, Greece
Alhambra - Granada, Spain
Angkor Wat - Angkor, Cambodia
Chichen Itza - Yucatan, Mexico
Christ the Redeemer - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Colosseum - Rome, Italy

Gunshot in Slow Motion

March 28th 2007 11:13
The photos below capture the moment a bullet is fired and enters ballistics gel.
Note the gunpowder exiting the barrel of the pistol and the damage the shockwave from the bullet does to the ballistics gel.
Also note the shape of the bullet as it exits the gel, they deform like that deliberately to do more damage.

Dog rescued from hurricane
The story begins with the rescuers finding this poor little guy they named Ralphie that someone had already taken under their wing but weren’t equipped to adopt;

House destroyed by hurricane
I wouldn’t think anything could live through this... but we were wrong.

Dog which survived storm wrecked house
This little lady survived that wreckage.

Here she is just placed in the car - scared, but safe.

Two dogs saved by animal rescuers

Two dogs saved by animal rescuers
Instant friends, they comforted each other while in the car.

Beagles saved from Hurricane damage
Add two more beagles found after that... the more, the merrier!

Cat jumping onto dogs in the back of the car
Oh boy, a new traveller to add to the mix...
(note: the cat coming over the seat needing shelter...)
now just how is this going to work???

Cats and Dogs happy together
It ' s going to work just fine, thank you very much!

Wow! The things we learn from our animal friends...

Lunar Eclipse

March 23rd 2007 14:00
A lunar eclipse occurs whenever the Moon passes through some portion of the Earth's shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, the Moon is always full during a lunar eclipse. The type and length of an eclipse depend upon the Moon's location relative to its orbital nodes. The most recent total lunar eclipse was on 3 and 4 March 2007. The next one will occur on 28 August 2007.

The pictures below are of the recent lunar eclipse.

Thailand's Beaches

March 21st 2007 13:15
Tourism is a major economic factor of Thailand and contributes about 5% of the Thai economy's GDP.

In 2005, 13.38 million international guests visited Thailand, a 14.84% increase on 2004, staying 8.1 days in average.

Thailand offers a great variety of attractions which can be combined with hobbies or leisure.
This includes dive sites, sandy beaches, hundreds of islands, archaeological sites, museums, ethnic and religious sites and World Heritage Sites.

According to the Tourist Authority of Thailand, 65% of tourists come from the Asia Pacific region, Japanese and Malaysians among the leaders. Western tourists come from Britain, Germany, Scandinavia and the USA and increasing numbers arrive from the Middle East. Asian tourists prefer Bangkok and the historical sights nearby, western tourists prefer Bangkok and the southern beaches.

Below are pictures of Thailand’s southern beaches. Many more shots here.

Stromboli Volcano

March 19th 2007 12:45
Stromboli is a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the north coast of Sicily, containing one of the active volcanos in Italy. It is one of the Aeolian Islands, a volcanic archipelago north of Sicily.

Stromboli stands 924 m above sea level, but actually rises over 2,000m above the ocean floor. There are three active craters at the peak. A significant geological feature of the volcano is the Sciara del Fuoco ("Stream of fire"), a big horseshoe-shaped depression generated in the last 13,000 years by several collapses on the north western side of the cone

Kurt Cobain

March 14th 2007 11:53
Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 – c. April 5, 1994) was the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of the Seattle-based rock band Nirvana. He served not only as the band's front man and principal songwriter, but also as its "leader and spiritual centre." With the band's success, Cobain became a major national and international celebrity, an uncomfortable position for a man who once said, "Famous is the last thing I wanted to be."

Cobain and Nirvana helped reshape popular music in the 1990s. In 1991, the arrival of Nirvana's hit single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" marked the beginning of a dramatic shift of popular rock music away from the dominant genres of the 1980s (glam metal, arena rock, and dance-pop) and toward grunge and alternative rock. The music media eventually awarded the song "anthem-of-a-generation" status, and, with it, Cobain ascended as the reluctant "spokesman" for Generation X. Other hit songs written by Cobain include "Come as You Are", "Lithium", "In Bloom", "Heart-Shaped Box", "All Apologies", and "About a Girl

Bob Dylan

March 9th 2007 11:49
Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter, author, musician, and poet who has been a major figure in popular music for five decades. Much of Dylan's most notable work dates from the 1960s, when he became an informal documentarian and reluctant figurehead of American unrest.

Dylan's early lyrics incorporated politics, social commentary, philosophy and literary influences, defying existing pop music conventions and appealing widely to the counterculture of the time

Blue Whales

March 7th 2007 11:30
Blue Whales were abundant in most oceans around the world until the beginning of the twentieth century. For the first 40 years of that century they were hunted by whalers almost to extinction. Hunting of the species was outlawed by the international community in 1966. A 2002 report estimated there were 5,000 to 12,000 Blue Whales worldwide. Before whaling the largest population 239,000 was in the Antarctic but now there remain only much smaller (around 2,000).

The Blue Whale is believed to be the largest animal ever to have lived on Earth. The largest known dinosaur was the Argentinosaurus, which is estimated to have weighed up to 90 tonnes
